Match Report | Tamworth Men’s First XI concluded their season with a 5-2 victory away to Ludlow on Saturday to finish the season in 6th. Ludlow had started strongly and pinned the home side back in the early stages, however Town’s defence limited the home side to few chances and as with many of their victories this season Tamworth carried their greatest thread on the counter attack. Tamworth took the lead midway through the half with a flowing move from left to right which saw Tom Grimshaw left unmarked in the D and he swept the ball into the far corner. Tamworth doubled their lead soon after, Ben Popple driving across the D and Tom Sperrink struck the loose ball inside the left post. Ian Wagstaff then scored in his final game as Captain with a drag flick which took a deflection before dropping into the corner to give Tamworth a 3-0 lead at the break. In the second half Tamworth shot out of the blocks with Wagstaff’s aerial pass from the restart controlled expertly and crossed by Kieron Dash for Tom Sperrink to touch beyond the keeper to extend Tamworth’s lead. Ludlow continued to come on the attack with their midfield playmaker a constant threat and they pulled one goal back with a well-placed shot and it took excellent marshalling from Ben Acheson and Dave Langford to maintain a comfortable lead. Tamworth struck a fifth goal when Callum Fennell was well placed to volley in at the back post from a penalty corner routine and although Ludlow scored a consolation goal to make it 5-2 Tamworth keeper demonstrated why he was the First XI player of the season by pulling off a superb reflex save in the final minutes. |
