Match Report | Tamworth Men’s First XI suffered a defeat in their first home fixture of the season against Solihull Blossomfield. Tamworth had started the game brightly and were controlling possession and territory however they fell behind to a set piece when Solihull converted a short corner. This seemed to give the visitors confidence and they doubled their lead when Tamworth failed to clear and the ball found its way into the net. Tamworth bounced back and after Ben Popple went close with a shot just wide, Town got themselves back into the game when Popple made amends as he gathered the ball following a pass from Tom Hancox and dispatched it past the keeper and player on the line. The hosts then levelled the scores when the ball fell kindly for Tom Sperrink and he struck reverse stick low into the corner. In the second half Solihull were much improved and they scored twice in quick succession to make the score 4-2 and leave Tamworth chasing the game. This saw frustration spill over as three Tamworth players saw yellow cards and one Solihull player spent time in the sin bin. 8 man Tamworth stood up well to wave after wave of attack and when returned to the full complement of players Sperrink scored with a strike from a short corner. Unfortunately this came too late in the game to salvage a positive result and Tamworth will take on Buxton in the Vase next Sunday before returning to league action the following week. |
