Match Report |
Tamworth faced top of the table Leamington on Saturday and secured their biggest win of the season as they took a giant step towards promotion.
Tamworth, who began the game six points behind Leamington in second place knew nothing but a win would be good enough with third placed Wednesbury hot on their tails.
The Town side were instantly under pressure as an excellent Leamington side barraged the Tamworth goal. Rourke and Busby looked sharp and goalkeeper Banks made some crucial early saves.
A breakaway attack by Tamworth released some pressure as they were awarded two consecutive short corners. The second, a neat move between Holloway and Bowyer, was duly converted by Bowyer to give Tamworth a crucial lead.
Tamworth then took full advantage of Leamingtons vulnerability at the back as Bowyer sweetly struck his second short corner straight between the goalkeepers legs.
In the second period Tamworth were once again under immense pressure, particularly when Bowyer was sent to the sidelines for a stick tackle.
The midfield partnership of Hicks and Calder were excellent, as every Tamworth player battled all clearly knowing how much difference a victory would make.
In the final ten minutes Leamington threw everything they had at Tamworth, and it was the agile saves of Banks in goal that secured him a clean sheet and man of the match, however it could have been awarded to any Tamworth player in this sensational performance that will surely see them promoted to West Midland Div 1 in two games time.
