Match Report | Tamworth Men’s First XI kicked off the new season by snatching a point with a late equaliser at Old Wulfrunians on Saturday. In miserable conditions Tamworth got off to the worst possible start as they conceded in the first 5 minutes of their opening league game. Town though picked themselves up and soon were back on level terms with an equaliser midway through the half. Tom Hancox starting and finished the move as he played a pass into the right channel to Tom Sperrink before breaking into the D for the return pass and although his first two efforts were saved he beat the keeper on the third effort slotting away the rebound. Old Wulfs came back strongly but Town stood firm to keep the scores level at half time. Immediately after the break Tamworth had their best spell of the game as they were camped in the hosts half but after a series of missed opportunities Town couldn’t find a way through. They looked like they would rue the missed chances as Old Wulfs weathered the storm and after a period of pressure struck twice in quick succession to retake the lead and take control of the game. Tamworth searched for a way back into the game and pulled one back with 5 minutes to go when Ian Wagstaff slipped a penalty corner to Sperrink who lifted his flicked shot high into the roof of the net. The home side looked like they would hold on for the win but when their centre back mis controlled the ball Sperrink was able to pinch the ball and round the keeper before slotting past the despairing slide of the last defender. The final whistle blew almost straight after the restart and so Tamworth will see this as a point gained and take positives from the spirit and dogged defence they showed in during certain periods of the game but know there is much to work on in terms of overall performance. |
