Match Report

Tamworth returned to league hockey following the Christmas break with a game against third placed Uttoxeter who were only a point behind the town side, coming away with a hard fought 3-1 win. The town side started brightly passing the ball around confidently with Paula Cooper and Jo Goode combining well down the right flank.  Tamworth took the lead early on with a great move started from the back Jacqui Casey passed the ball to Claire Miles who in turn found  Jo Goode on the right she beat a couple of players before crossing to Fiona Ferguson who showed great composure to slot the ball home. Unfortunately the towns form dipped with Uttoxeter coming back into the game as Tamworth struggled to clear their lines and the home side equalised to go into the break all square.

Uttoxeter started the second half positively as Tamworth had to withstand a lot of pressure Leah Ward made some vital tackles alongside GK Nicky Youngman who made a number of excellent saves to keep the scores level. The town side looked dangerous on the break and from one of these Alex Gayton and Fiona Ferguson combined well to set up Claire Miles to restore Tamworth’s lead.  Jacqui Casey, Lucy Plant and Jo Goode worked tirelessly in midfield with Tamworth having a couple of good opportunities to increase their lead further unfortunately these were not taken and with Uttoxeter pushing forward the next goal would prove to be important to the outcome of the game, Tamworth were once again indebted to GK Youngman who once again made a string of brilliant saves before another breakaway attack this time Rebecca Warburton scoring to clinch all three points, to set up a top of the table clash with Stone next week.
