Match Report | Score 2-2 (1-2 penalties) Tamworth suffered heartbreak once again as they lost out in sudden death penalties in the England hockey Tier 4 cup competition on Sunday against Nottingham side West Bridgford. The towns opponents were quick out the blocks putting Tamworth under pressure from the off, but as Tamworth started to settle they looked dangerous on the break and after only 11 minutes Claire Miles cleared the ball to Alex Gayton who beat a couple of defenders before firing home to give the town the lead. Tamworth hit the post before Gayton scored her second from a penalty flick after Emma Jonson’s shot on goal was illegally stopped on the line. However Tamworth’s two goal lead was short lived as West Bridgford hit back two minutes later from a short corner strike. 13 year olds Alex Wylie and Bea Pound had super games in midfield showing great skill and awareness as they passed the ball around in style, but the score remained 2-1 going into the break. Once again West Bridgford started the half the better forcing a number of short corners which Tamworth defended well with GK Nicky Youngman in outstanding form pulling off a number of brilliant saves, but the pressure told as West Bridgford equalised five minutes into the second half. The game opened up with both sides looking for the winning goal, The Town side still looking dangerous on the break with the pace of their forwards always troubling West Bridgford’s defence but the winning goal eluded both sides and the tie would be decided by penalties. Both GK’s were on top in the first round of flicks with both sides scoring only once so it went to sudden death with West Bridgford scoring theirs unfortunately Miles put her flick wide and the tie was lost. POM was Nicky Youngman who had an outstanding game. |
