Match Report | In the penultimate game of the season Tamworth were surprised at the standard of hockey that bottom of the league North Staffs produced. Tamworth rose to the challenge, playing the type of passing hockey that has seen them in to the top two spots in the league all season.
Youngsters Bea Pound and Rebecca Warburton together with Fiona Fergusson ran tirelessly and got themselves into excellent positions throughout the game. The back 4 of Keeper Nikki Youngman, and defenders Paula Cooper, Sarah Hutchins and Lea Ward held strong at the back, thwarting each North Staffs attack as both teams played at pace. Jacqui Casey, Lucy Plant, Claire Miles and Captain Kirsty Brown held strong in the centre of the field and Jo Goode had yet another excellent game on the right, beating players at will and getting into the D at every opportunity.
5 minutes before the break North Staffs broke into the D and Youngman made a string of stunning saves to ensure the teams went into the break level.
The level of pace continued into the second half with Tamworth getting into the North Staffs D one on one with the Keeper but couldn't beat her. With 10 minutes to go Tamworth were awarded a short corner. Goode hit the ball out with pace to Miles at the top of the D who coolly dinked the ball around the defender running out, then hammered the ball into the back of the net to take the lead and, after a nervous 10 minutes, the game. Pound was voted league player of the match with Goode winning players player.
Other results in the league mean that Tamworth will finish no lower than 2nd in the league with promotion depending on if a Staffordshire team come down from higher leagues.
