Match Report | Tamworth Men’s First XI were beaten 3-0 away at table toppers on Saturday in their first game of the New Year. Tamworth travelled to the league leaders missing a number of first team regulars and set up defensively in the opening period. The hosts had much of the ball but Tamworth limited it to only a few clear cut opportunities in the opening exchanges. Midway through the half Wolverhampton finally broke through when they opened the scoring following a quickly taken free hit outside the D. Following the goal Tamworth had their only real spell of attacking pressure but couldn’t make it count with a blocked penalty corner and the keeper out quickly to smother a one on one opportunity. Wolverhampton then struck again to just before half time to leave Tamworth trailing by two at the break. The second half followed a similar pattern, Wolverhampton the stronger side and with substitutes available to them on the bench and Tamworth struggling with only the bare eleven it was inevitable that the home side would score again, which they did with a well worked penalty routine. It was a credit to the players available to Tamworth that this was the limit to the damage and with a couple of players nursing injuries and illness Town did well to keep the score to only three. Tamworth are still second bottom of the league at the halfway point of the season and will hope to have better squad availability when they face Pershore at home next week. |
