Match Report | Tamworth Men's First XI succumbed to a 5-3 defeat away to Edgbaston with their most disappointed result and performance of the season so far. Tamworth were looking to add some much needed points against winless Edgbaston and having weathered an early period of pressure and a couple of penalty corner efforts, Town took the lead when a ball into the channel was well held up by Ben Thacker before Tom Sperrink was released to work his way across the top of the D and strike low into the bottom corner. Tamworth should have built upon this lead but were poor in possession and struggled to cope with Edgbaston attacking in numbers with runners from midfield. As Tamworth laboured they conceded an equaliser from a penalty flick when Ben Acton was adjudged to have intentionally kicked the ball in the D before going behind when they failed to cope with a swift counter attack to go in behind at the break. Tamworth would have hoped for an improvement in the second period but saw more of the same as they were cut open down the flanks before failing to cut out crosses which left the Edgbaston attack with a series of simple goals to eventually extend their lead to 5-1. Town mounted something of a comeback with Ryan Brisco scoring with a reverse stick effort on the rebound after a shot from Simon Cooper before Tom Sperrink was played in by Brisco and his strike towards the top corner could only be deflected by the keeper into the backboard. In truth Tamworth could and should have scored more with Sperrink guilty of missing one on one twice and Cooper missing out on a close range opportunity but Tamworth must tighten up at the back and gain a greater control of the game if they are to get anything from their game at home to Ludlow on Saturday. |
