Match Report | Tamworth Men’s First XI suffered a 4-2 defeat at home to Sikh Union on Saturday. With a strong side available Tamworth had started the game brightly and had a period of sustained pressure early on as the played some excellent possession hockey. Unfortunately Sikh Union took the lead when from a short corner as the ball squirmed underneath the dive of Tony Banks. A second goal came with a goal from open play and this seemed to deflate the hosts as the Sikh’s had the better chances later in half, although Tamworth stood firm to weather a spell towards the end of the half as Banks was sent to sin bin and James Goode was forced to don the keeper kit. Tamworth got a deserved goal back early in the second half when Ian Wagstaff’s dangerous ball into the D took a heavy deflection off a defender to nestle in the bottom corner. Unfortunately the away side restored their two goal lead when Goode bundled over a Sikh Union forward and the resulting penalty flick was fired into the top corner. The final nail in the coffin for Tamworth came when a quickly taken free hit saw the Sikh’s top scorer drive into the D and smash a reverse stick shot into the top corner. Tamworth showed their fighting spirit as Ian Wagstaff drilled a strike into the bottom corner from a penalty corner but it was too late to salvage any points.
