Match Report | Tamworth Men’s First XI hauled themselves back into touching distance of avoiding relegation with a dramatic 3-2 win over Aldridge & Walsall at QEMS on Sunday. Tamworth were desperate for a win but faced an uphill battle when Aldridge took the lead midway through the first half with a goal from a penalty corner. The home team were well supported on the sidelines and after battling to get back into the game they were rewarded with an equaliser when Ryan Briscoe picked a pass between two defenders and Tom Sperrink beat the keeper with a shot into the roof of the net. In the second half Aldridge had the greater possession but Tamworth always carried a threat on the break and they took the lead when Ian Wagstaff’s aerial pass released Sperrink down the left and he crossed for Tom Hancox to charge onto the ball and beat the keeper. Tamworth then gave themselves a two goal cushion when a well worked routine from a penalty corner saw Tom Beasley deflect in Ian Wagstaff’s flick. The visitors came back strongly and reduced Tamworth’s lead when a forward was left with time and space to score from the left side of the D. Tony Banks was on hand in goal to make two brilliant reflex saves and the pressure increased as Sperrink spent the final minutes of the game in the sin bin for time wasting. With the final act of the game Aldridge appeared to have stolen a draw with a hit from a penalty corner however the umpires ruled this out as the ball struck a foot in the build-up and Tamworth could celebrate a vital 3 points. |
