Match Report | Tamworth Men’s First XI lost out 4-3 away to Old Silhillians on Saturday in the final game before the Christmas break. Neither side looked at their best in the early exchanges although Old Sils had the better of the possession and forced a number of penalty corners which they were unable to convert. It was from one of these corners that Tamworth countered down the left wing when Ryan Brisco released Tom Sperrink and he squared for Tom Hancox to tap in. The pattern of the game continued and Old Sils equalised from a penalty corner to make the game 1-1 at the break. In the second half Old Sils took the lead and that this did seem to arouse a response from the visiting team as Tamworth had their most sustained period of pressure. Unfortunately they couldn’t find a goal and Old Sils were awarded a penalty flick which they duly converted to extend their lead to 3-1. Tamworth hit back immediately and after a penalty corner saw Nick Martin’s shot blocked illegally on the line Ian Wagstaff stepped up to convert low to the keeper’s left. Old Sils struck again from a penalty corner and once again Tamworth hit back with another penalty flick, this time Sperrink converted having been brought down by the keeper. Unfortunately this was the final goal of the game and Tamworth will face an uphill battle in the New Year to stay in the division. |
