Match Report | Tamworth Men’s First XI were held to a 2-2 draw on Saturday at Bloxwich. Town knew this would be an important game with Bloxwich just a five points and one place below second placed Tamworth. The hosts success had been built on the second best defensive record in the league and this was evident as both sides were cancelling each other out. As the game wore on Tamworth did begin to create opportunities however they were guilty of rushing the final action with Tom Sperrink and Ben Popple both screwed their shots wide when well placed to score. It seemed that the sides would go into half time level only for Tamworth to grab the lead just before the interval. A penalty corner was award to Tamworth and Ryan Brisco showed quick reactions to deflect in at the far post from a cross-shot from Sperrink. The second half started in the similar manner only for Tamworth to lose their heads when seemingly in control. A controversial goal was scored by Bloxwich from open play with Tamworth claiming a foot in the build up and Bloxwich when struck again moments later to turn the game around and lead 2-1. With Tamworth then losing Graeme Cook and Ian Wagstaff to the sin bin for green card offences it seemed like that game was slipping away and as Tamworth spurned further chances with their decision making in the final third lacking it seemed like Bloxwich would hold on for the win. Fortunately for Tamworth their break game in the final ten minutes as Tom Hancox found space for a shot which was only half saved and Sperrink was quickest to the loose ball to tap in. Not necessarily the result or performance Tamworth would have hoped for but an important point to maintain the gap to the chasing pack. |
