Match Report | Tamworth Men's First XI got the new season off to the best possible start with a 4-0 win at home to Wednesbury on Saturday. With the restructure to the league structure Town knew that a strong start to the season was vital and they started this game on the front foot, dominating possession and territory. Despite their superiority Town were struggling to break the deadlock and spurned a string of opportunities to score, with their penalty corner routine especially not as slick as they would hope and the visitors keeper in fine form. Eventually Tamworth found the opening when Tom Sperrink fired a pass into the D and Ben Popple stole a yard on his marker to deflect past the helpless keeper to lead 1-0 at half time. After the break Tamworth hoped to improve on their first half profligacy but were close to conceding an equaliser. A penalty flick was awarded to Wednesbury for a foul in the D however youngster Ethan Oxley on his first team league debut hung out a foot to save the flick. This break served as the turning point and Tamworth went back on the front foot securing the crucial second goal when a sweeping move down the right wing finished with Connor Diggins laying the ball into Tom Hancox to double Town's lead. Ben Popple then completed a hattrick first pouncing on a rebound off the keeper before wrapping up the scoring when Elliott Birchall played him in to strike low into the corner. Tamworth first and second teams face each other next week in the ultimate derby game. |
