Match Report | Tamworth Men’s First XI’s trip to Nottingham Trent University saw 17 goals scored as Tamworth came off worst losing 11-6. Town started the game well as they opening the scoring when a lifted ball was played on and Tom Sperrink took advantage striding into the D and hitting the ball low past the keeper. This sparked the hosts into the life and the laid siege on the Tamworth D with only a series of excellent saves from James Miles between the posts keeping Town in the game. Eventually Trent Uni broke through going 3-1 ahead with Tamworth pulling one back just before the break, Tom Hancox was set through one on one and his rebounded shot was poked back into the danger area by Lewis McCall for Ben Popple to reduce the deficit to one goal at half time. Following half time Tamworth immediately levelled the tie with Sperrink dribbling into the D before laying off for Hancox to slap in from a tight angle. Unfortunately this was as close as Tamworth would come to taking any points from the game as the home side unleashed scoring at regular intervals throughout the remainder of the game. Tamworth did score three more goals but at this stage the result was out of sight. Hancox struck a shot from a penalty corner that Ryan Brisco delicately flicked into the top left corner while under pressure. Popple turned provider as he played the ball in for Hancox to convert with a reverse stick effort through the keepers legs for his 17th league goal of the season and Popple added a second assist soon after releasing Sperrink who struck low into the bottom left corner. Tamworth drop to bottom of the league with this defeat, now 7 points from safety and with significantly worse goal difference as they welcome third placed Derwent on Saturday. |
