Match Report | Tamworth Men’s First XI conceded six goals for the second consecutive week, this time losing 6-2 away to promotion chasing Ashby. Tamworth had a much changed line up with a number of senior players missing and, in an effort to stem the number of goals they have conceded in recent weeks, also adjusted formation to a more defensive setup. This seemed to bring a new found steel to the side and although, as expected, Ashby enjoyed the majority of possession and territory, Town were not as open as they have been this season. Eventually the pressure did tell and Ashby opened the scoring from a penalty corner before they were gifted another when Tom Sperrink under hit a pass across the back for the Ashby forward to score despite the best efforts of Ian Wagstaff on the line. Ashby struck again before Tamworth pulled one back when Sperrink played in Tom Hancox on the right of the D and he unleashed a shot inside the near post to give the visitors a lifeline. Unfortunately Ashby regained their three goal advantage with a goal just before the break to make it 4-1 at half time. In the second half Tamworth managed to frustrate their free scoring opponents and pulled a goal back when Wagstaff’s aerial pass found Sperrink and he struck low past the Ashby keeper. In the late stages Ashby scored twice to put some gloss on the scoreline, with one superbly worked deflected goal to finish the game but whilst the hosts were deserving winners , the scoreline was harsh on a spirited Tamworth performance. Despite the six goals James Miles picked up man of the match thanks to some excellent reflex saves and Ben Robins put in a tireless effort in midfield alongside Ryan Brisco who carried over his impressive form from the previous week. Finally youngster Jasper Williams acquitted himself well against high quality opponents as Town look to take positives into a relegation 6 pointer next week at home to Berkswell and Balsall Common. |
