Match Report | Tamworth Men’s First XI suffered their first defeat of the season, losing 3-1 at home to Ashby. The visitors started the game the stronger but despite being put under pressue Tamworth held firm and looked resolute in defence and limited Ashby to half chances. Tamworth had a good opportunity to take the lead but Ben Popple saw his shot from the top of the D slide just past the post. This seemed to stir Ashby further and they then took the lead with a deflection before scoring a second soon after. Town continued to create chances on the break with Tom Sperrink having a shot saved and Ian Wagstaff a shot saved from a penalty corner. Ashby took advantage of the missed chances and extended their lead to 3-0 when Tamworth failed to clear the ball and Ashby struck to take a commanding lead into half time. After the break Tamworth were much more positive and Ryan Brisco had a disallowed goal from a penalty corner before Wagstaff saw a drag flick go inches wide moments later. The visiting side continued to press but were limited to fewer chances but Tamworth couldn’t find a breakthrough until late on when Wagstaff fired into the D and Sperrink deflected the ball into the corner for a late consolation goal. The result means Tamworth lose top spot and slide to fifth but they face important games against Berkswell and Nottingham in the next two weeks. |
