Match Report

Tamworth went into the 4th league game of their season looking to return to winning ways and make it 3 wins from 4 after the previous weeks disappointing draw.

The game started well for Tamworth dominating the early possession with good attacking play from the midfield and forwards, but it was Stafford who took the lead against the run of play.  Their first attack of the half saw a penalty corner being conceded by the home team, which was quickly converted leaving the town trailing for the first time this season.  The team responded well however with good periods of possession causing the Stafford defence problems which led to several penalty corners, one of which was calmly slotted home by Wagstaff.  Stafford looked to hit their front men early and created a few chances themselves which were all comfortably dealt with by the defense.  As the half progressed Tamworth continued to push for further goals and good work from the midfield duo of Herring and Haywood gave Sperrink the opportunity to take Tamworth into half time with a 2-1 lead.

After the break Tamworth continued with their high tempo and utilizing their substitutes well continued to try and play the game in the Stafford half.  To their credit Stafford continued to press for the equalizer and put the town defense under pressure, however the defense held strong.  As the second half progressed the Tamworth forwards continued to create chances and Hancox converted after some good play by Briscoe to give the home side a bit of breathing space.  The remainder of the game saw Stafford go all out to score, which they managed with a few minutes left leaving a tense end to the game, and despite a penalty corner being awarded at the final whistle they could not find the net again giving Tamworth a well deserved victory.

Man of the match was Dave Langford.
