Match Report | Tamworth Mens 2nd XI endured a gruelling, but not unreasonable result, in the friendly game against a Hampton team who are likely to be contesting promotion in the East Midlands Premier, a division above Tamworth. In the early stages there was very little to separate the teams. However, after twenty minutes Hampton started to take control of the possession, with Tamworth working quite effectively on the counter, one such break saw a defence splitting pass from Tamworth's Graeme Cook, but from the three on two situation Tamworth's forwards conspired to miss what was one of their few chances of the half. Hampton broke the deadlock after a partially blocked shot was put past the prone Tamworth keeper. Hampton's second came from a goalmouth scramble, 'keeper Jack Corden made two great saves only to see his third block trickle despairingly over the line. The second half saw more pressure from Hampton, who continued to move the ball around well, resulting in some meaningful chances and many short corners. Tamworth did well to absorb the pressure with a strong defensive effort from Nick Rammel and Rob Busby, and continued to attack on the counter with the pace of Ben Popple and Dylan Waldron. Jez Holloway pulled a goal back mid way through the half, from a well won and well executed short corner. Both teams were reduced to ten men after a tough tackle and a retaliation, but it did not effect the flow of the game. A superb aerial pass from Chris Charles was put wide by Graeme Cook, who also had an effort scrambled off the line, when a pass to Jez Holloway may have been the better option. Despite this, Hampton continued to dominate and peppered the Tamworth goal. Tamworth were left to rue several missed chances from Ben Popple and an unlucky Jez Holloway, who hit the post, as Hampton went on to score a well worked third goal as Tamworth tired late on.
Despite the result, Tamworth can take a lot from the game and will look to step up when they play their next game (the first in the league) against Solihull Blossomfield on the 8th of October. |
