Match Report | Tamworth Men’s First XI faced a crucial double header at the weekend against teams at opposite ends of the table. On Saturday Town visited second placed Derwent in a game that Tamworth knew would be a tough ask to take points from. Tamworth were immediately disadvantaged when a late drop out meant that vice captain James Griffin had to play in goal for the first time. Tamworth then got off to the worst start possible conceding from a penalty corner in the opening exchanges and then fell to a second goal when Ian Wagstaff’s attempted clearance fell kindly for the Derwent forward. Following the early disappointment the visitors managed to regroup and whilst Derwent struck again midway through the half Tamworth showed a great fighting spirit to work their way back into the game. After the break the hosts again scored soon after the restart to make it 4-0 but Tamworth put together some good attacking moves and Tom Hancox, who was enduring a lonely existence up front was unlucky to see his reverse stick effort slide past the far post and also put an superb pass across the face of goal which should have been converted. Tamworth defended manfully with Andy Parker putting in a man of the match performance at full back but despite his efforts and a brave effort in goal by Griffin Derwent were able to breach Town’s defences twice more to wrap up a 6-0 win. |
