Match Report

Tamworth Men’s First XI made it back to back wins for the first time this season with a comfortable 6-0 home win against bottom of the table Wellingborough.

Tamworth were missing a few members of the first team squad and started the game poorly as they gifted possession to Wellingborough on more than one occasion in the opening exchanges but were fortunate to see the visitors shoot wide.  This seem to jolt Town into life and they opened the scoring when Tom Hancox unleashed a reverse stick strike that the keeper half saved only for Tom Grimshaw to race in and slam home on the line.  Grimshaw was at the heart of the action for the second goal; a swift counter attack saw Grimshaw square the ball for Tom Sperrink and he raced into the right hand side of the D before firing in across the keeper.  Man of the match Ben Acheson was excellent in both thwarting Wellingborough’s forays forward and in distributing the ball out to keep the hosts on the front foot.  Tamworth continued on the attack and scored twice more before the break, both from penalty corners.  Firstly Tom Hancox struck a shot which squirmed under the keeper for Tamworth’s third and then Ian Wagstaff scored with a well worked routine that saw Dave Langford tee the ball up for him before Wagstaff nut-megged the defender and flicked his shot into the corner.  It could have been even better for Tamworth but Callum Taylor spurned two excellent opportunities and Cameron Hancox rushed his shot when free in the D.

After the break Tamworth were keen to ram home their advantage and improve their goal difference.  Tom Hancox scored Tamworth’s fifth and his second when he neatly deflected a hit down the centre from Wagstaff and Tom Sperrink also bagged a brace, with Cameron Hancox atoning for his earlier miss with a perfectly weighted pass for Sperrink to lift over the onrushing keeper.  Tamworth seemed to take their foot off the gas at this point and it was only thanks to two excellent saves from Simon Carey that they ensured it was 10 goals without reply from their last two league games but can be pleased to have won another crucial game.

Tamworth face mid-table North Notts away in the final game before the winter break but will be keen to try to maintain their winning run and extend the gap between themselves and the relegation spots.
