Match Report | Tamworth Men’s First XI fought valiantly but we beaten 7-2 at home by top of the table Boots on Saturday. Town had started the game well and although Boots had a couple of early chances the hosts were holding out until a well worked goal from Boots saw them break the deadlock midway through the half. Tamworth weren’t disheartened and Ian Wagstaff was unfortunate to see his powerful penalty corner strike deflected wide by the Boots keeper. Tamworth then grabbed an equaliser on the break as Wagstaff picked out Tom Sperrink in the D and his attempted deflection on goal fell to Callum Taylor who coolly slotted the ball under the diving keeper. Boots came back on the offensive and retook the lead before half time although Tamworth were indebted to Rhys Hogben on his league debut for the 1st team making a series of good saves with one particular diving stick save drawing praise from both sides. After the break Town came out in positive fashion but were undone by two quick fire goals by the visitors. Tamworth struck again, this time Tom Hancox showing good awareness to score from close range but Boot’s immediately re-established their three goal advantage with a penalty flick to make the score 5-2. A further flick followed before a final goal from open play as Tamworth tired in the latter stages to enable Boots to add some gloss to the scoreline. Town can take positives from Tom Hancox showing glimpses of being back to his best and the performance of Hogben who stepped up well for a tough fixture. Tamworth drop into the bottom two for the first time since the opening weekend prior to a league and vase double header this weekend against local and relegation rivals Nuneaton and Triton respectively. |
