Match Report | Tamworth Men’s First XI battled back from two goals down to take a deserved first win of the season as they defeated Buxton 3-2 at home. Tamworth had started brightly and from the first whistle dominated possession and territory as Town’s players showed the confidence on the ball that they lacked the previous week. Despite the pressure Buxton stood firm however, defending in numbers and keeping Town outside of the D, thereby restricting Tamworth to few clear cut chances. Almost inevitably it was then the visitors who broke the deadlock with a well worked move on the break which eventually saw the ball played across the goal and Simon Carey unable to prevent a simple tap in at the far post. This only galvanised Tamworth further and as they continued to press chances finally started to come. Ian Wagstaff saw a powerful strike from a penalty corner deflected wide and Tom Grimshaw twice managed to work opportunities to shoot only fire narrowly wide. Tamworth came out in a positive frame of mind following the break buoyed by their first half performance but the bubble was burst almost immediately as Buxton doubled their advantage. Town again pushed on and began the fightback when Wagstaff’s shot on a penalty was blocked and fell to Ryan Brisco who crashed his shot from a tight angle high into the roof of the net. Tamworth now had the momentum and Brisco was again at the heart of the action, Ross Carter showed dogged determination to win the ball high up the pitch and squared to Brisco who played a pinpoint pass into Tom Sperrink to slap through the keepers legs and level the score. The hosts were benefiting from having fresh legs with 3 substitutes available and completed the turnaround when Tom Hancox had a shot which initially got stuck under the keeper and Cameron Hancox reacting quickest to poke the loose ball in and cap a fine overall display from the youngest member of the squad. A genuine all round team performance from Tamworth which only further strengthened their fighting spirit and they will look to maintain this level of performance in the coming weeks starting with an away trip to Nottingham Trent Uni on Saturday. |
