Match Report | On Sunday Tamworth faced local rivals Nuneaton in the second round of the England Hockey Vase, progressing with an emphatic 4-1 win. Despite some tired legs from the previous days efforts Town showed commitment and attacking intent from the start but were caught by a sucker punch as Nuneaton’s forward was released with a long ball down the centre to open the scoring. Town weren’t disheartened and bounced back with an equaliser coming from Tom Sperrink. Sperrink then bagged his brace soon after when he pounced on a rebound following a penalty corner. Town looked to extend their lead further but were thwarted by a brilliant performance from the visiting keeper as he made numerous impressive saves with Town piling on the pressure. After the break Tamworth were indebted to Tony Banks for maintaining their advantage as he showed sharp reflexes to save down low. Town had chances from penalty corners which were saved before they finally put the game to bed. Ian Wagstaff grabbed the third goal converting a penalty flick to the keepers right after his shot was blocked on the line by a Nuneaton foot. Captain Tom Hancox completed the scoring by rounding the keeper to cap a fine Tamworth display. |
