Match Report | Tamworth Men’s First XI suffered only their second defeat of the season as they were beaten 2-0 at Newark on Saturday. Town had started brightly and pressed Newark back in the early stages but the hosts slowly grew into the game and dominated possession. As Tamworth were pinned back in their own half for extended periods it required hard work from Ian Wagstaff, Ben Acheson and Dan Phillips in midfield to keep Newark at bay. Eventually they broke through following a penalty corner late in the half. In the second half Tamworth were hoping to find a way back into the game however despite some excellent long range passes from Ryan Brisco, Tamworth couldn’t find their usual rhythm and threat on the break. In fact it was only thanks to a man of the match performance from Tony Banks in goal that Tamworth remained in the match as long as they did. Eventually Newark got the second goal their dominance deserved with an unstoppable first time finish into the top corner. Whilst Tamworth will be disappointed to be beaten they can still wrap up the title, barring a massive swing in goal difference, if they beat Nuneaton next Saturday. |
