Match Report | Tamworth Men’s First XI got back to winning ways with a 6-1 victory in their repeat fixture against Long Buckby, but will feel frustrated to have not forced a more impressive score line. Tamworth took control of the game early on; Ryan Brisco cutting the ball back across goal setting up an easy tap-in for Captain Tom Hancox. Tamworth looked to be in complete control of the game when they netted their second – Brisco once more in the action, striking the ball home from an acute angle despite the efforts of the sprawling Long Buckby keeper. Ian Wagstaff secured Tamworth’s third goal from a short corner soon after – following up on the rebound of his initial drag flick, looping the ball over the goalkeeper despite the initial save. Tamworth weren’t to have it all their own way in the first half; despite applying sustained pressure, Long Buckby were able to weather a number of Tamworth attempts on goal and pulled one back shortly before half time with a well-worked short corner routine. Sensing a potential upset, Long Buckby came out sharply in the second half and looked to capitalise on some loose build-up play from Tamworth. However, Nick Pound and man of the match Dave Langford were on hand to dismantle the counter-attacking threat. The opposition’s hopes of a comeback were dashed when the on-form Ryan Brisco secured his second goal of the game, forcing the ball home after a goal line scramble. Tamworth began to turn the screw as the game entered its final stages, scoring two in quick succession courtesy of a reverse stick effort from skipper Hancox, and a deserved goal for Ben Popple – who had posed a consistent threat down the wings throughout the course of the game. |
