Match Report | Tamworth Men’s First XI got back to winning ways with a 5-1 home win over bottom placed Ashbourne. Town showed attacking intent from the first whistle, pressing Ashbourne back into their own half and looking to profit on mistakes. Captain Tom Hancox led the way when he opening the scoring following a pass from Ryan Brisco and turned sharply to slip the ball into the right corner. Hancox grabbed his second when Ian Wagstaff fired a pinpoint pass into Tom Sperrink and he deflected onto Hancox to take it around the last defender and stroke in on his reverse stick. Tamworth kept pushing and Sam Turner terrorised the visitors defence with his pace on the left wing. The hosts added their third when Wagstaff drove from deep with the ball and created space on the right of the D before smashing his shot into the top left corner. Sperrink rounded off the first half scoring with a push under the keeper which crept over the line to give Tamworth a comprehensive 4-0 lead at the break. After the break Tamworth increased the lead with Sperrink sealing his brace when released down the right by Tom Grimshaw he beat the keeper with strike inside the near post. Ashbourne then had their best spell of the game as Tamworth lost their shape and Ashbourne picked up a consolation goal with a well worked move down their right wing. Man of the match Andy Parker ensured they didn’t get any more joy as he shackled the visitor’s main playmaker. Turner was unlucky not to add to the tally as he saw a shot late in the game turned around the post. The win puts Tamworth back top of the league and now move onto a trip to Kettering on Saturday. |
