Match Report | Tamworth Men’s First XI added a second win of the weekend on Sunday with a 5-2 victory away to Old Wulfrunians in the National Vase. Tamworth started brightly and following a disallowed goal from Tom Hancox they took the lead their play deserved with Ryan Brisco on hand to finish after a driving run from Ian Wagstaff. Old Wulfs hit back soon after as they scored following a break down Tamworth’s left and both sides had chances in a frantic first half. Tamworth retook the lead when following flowing build up work from Hancox and Brisco the latter played in Tom Sperrink whose deflection came off the keeper and crept over the line. Tamworth flew out of the blocks second half when Hancox won a penalty corner straight from the restart and Sperrink converted with a low strike into the bottom corner. Again Old Wulfs came back and reduced Tamworth’s advantage with a powerful strike from a penalty corner. Tamworth went on the attack and youngsters Will Hounsome, Cameron Hancox and Ben Thacker all contributing to Town’s attacking threat which was aided further when Old Wulfs had a player sin binned. This gave Tamworth the extra impetus they needed and Sperrink grabbed his third and fourth goals, firstly deflecting Wagstaff’s slide rule pass beyond the keeper before striking from another penalty corner. Tamworth weathered a period of pressure late in the game when Andy Parker saw yellow for a push with Ross Carter and man of the match Tom Grimshaw outstanding in keeping out the hosts in the final stages to advance to the second round. |
